Not All Baby Products are Created Equal

Most mothers will use creams or oils to protect their baby’s skin and will do so with the best intentions of love and care. Unfortunately the use of petroleum based oils and parabens are not recommended by organic regulatory authorities.

Most commercial shampoos, body washes, soaps and bubble baths contain sulphates and Triethanolamine that can wash away some of the skins natural oils and flora and could cause skin irritation and inflammation.

Irritants can cause nappy rash, eczema, heat rash, face rash, skin dermatitis, baby acne and sweat rash. It’s good to remember that the skin is the body’s biggest organ and can absorb most of what you put onto it. A baby’s system is fragile and still developing. The last thing you want to do is use chemicals that irritate a baby’s skin.

We encourage all mothers to become well informed by making themselves aware of the ingredients in the products they choose for their precious baby
and to make an informed choice.

Here are the GLÜKi™ Organics Ingredients used:

Baobab fruit Powder

Baobab fruit powder is a pale powder that forms naturally inside the fruits of the baobab tree (Adansonia digitata).

It has an exotic tangy flavour due to its content of citric, malic and tartaric acids and is exceptionally nutritious containing high natural levels of antioxidants, essential minerals including calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium, and vitamin C. For more information see:

Marula Oil

Marula oil is a popular ingredient for skincare products because it naturally softens, nourishes and revitalises the skin.marula fruit on the tree It is easily absorbed and contains high proportions of oleic acid and linoleic fatty acid, making it ideal for topical application.

It is high in natural antioxidants and one of the most stable oils available, being ten times more resistant to oxidation than olive oil. Marula oil has also been shown to improve skin hydration and skin smoothness, and to reduce redness. In studies it performed better than sweet almond oil for each of these properties.

Kalahari Melon

Oil from the seeds of the Kalahari melon is used by a number of cosmetics companies as in products that moisturise, regenerate and restructure the skin.

Kalahari melon oil is rich in essential fatty acids, especially linoleic, oleic and palmitic fatty acids, and is cholesterol free. It has high antioxidant activity, which possibly helps the plant to survive in the harsh Kalahari desert environment.

Mongongo Oil

The bright yellow oil pressed from the seeds of the mongongo tree contains high levels of vitamin E (tocopherol), linoleic and eleostearic acids, making it a very useful oil for skin protection. It is effective not only for hydrating the skin but also for restructuring and regenerating the epidermis.

The eleostearic acid reacts rapidly with UV light, producing polymerisation and providing a protective layer. The high vitamin E content also provides the oil with excellent stability which is proven in the heat of Southern Africa where the oil does not become rancid.

Mafura Butter

Oil from the seeds of the trichilia tree forms a solid butter at room temperature and melts at 30˚C.

The butter is rich in essential fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic) and has been shown to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity due to the presence of limonids such as Trichilin A. It has also been shown to scavenge free radicals more effectively than many other oils on the market.

Jojoba Seed Oil

Organic Jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba) oil is a botanical extract of the seed of the Jojoba tree (Simmondsia chinenis). Technically it is not actually an oil, but rather what is called a wax ester. Out of all of the compounds in nature, this wax ester is the most similar to human skin oil (sebum). By applying Jojoba to the skin, the skin’s oil production is moderated.

Jojoba oil provides all day moisturisation as it doesn’t evaporate like water based moisturisers can. It spreads well and absorbs well. We use Jojoba oil in GLÜKi products such as our Organic Mother Tissue Oil to feed the skin, balance oil production and enhance elasticity.

Shea Fruit Oil

Organic Shea fruit oil is extracted from the nuts of the Shea tree (Butyrospermum parkii), which grows in the savannah of Western Africa. Growing up to 60 feet tall, the Shea tree does not flower before it is 20 years old and can live up to 200 years.

Shea butter is one of the best moisturising, regenerating and protecting natural products in the world. It protects your skin from UV sunlight, harsh climate, dehydration and pollution damages. It strengthens your skin by stimulating the production of collagen, which is the youthful scaffolding protein in your skin. Shea butter protects the skin from both environmental and free-radical damage. It contains vitamins A and E, and has demonstrated both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sunflower Oil

Organic Sunflower Oil retains moisture, and helps prevent the skin from drying out. It also helps to keep the skin looking youthful and vibrantly healthy. It contains a rich mixture of vitamins and other natural substances that have a healthy effect on your skin

One of the benefits of organic sunflower oil is that it acts as an antioxidant, due to the presence of vitamin E in it. Vitamin E also acts as an emollient that traps moisture inside skin cells. Therefore, using sunflower oil for skin helps keep it hydrated for a longer period.Organic sunflower oil also contains the nutrients Palmitic acid, Stearic acid, Lecithin, Tocopherols, Carotenoids, Selenium, Proteins, Copper, Iron, Zinc, Calcium and Omega-6 fatty acids.

Organic Avocado Oil

Organic Avocado oil’s benefits include very high levels of healthy monounsaturated fats, phytosterols and antioxidants like vitamin E. All of these nutrients help to improve your skin tone.

Avocado oil is one of the most penetrative of all natural plant oils. Unlike most moisturisers and many other natural oils, it is believed to penetrate through the epidermis and into the dermis layer of our skin. This results in extremely soft and hydrated skin. And, due to its humectant properties that prevent drying out, this moisturising effect is long-lasting. Organic Avocado oil is also believed to increase collagen production within the layers of the dermis.

Organic Aloe Vera

Organic Aloe Vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India and has been used medicinally for centuries.

Rooibos is hypoallergenic, allowing our scientists to develop skin care that are naturally suitable for all skin types. Its anti-bacterial property is another advantage, as it can help alleviate bacterial infections on the skin.
